Card Verification Value

The short security code printed on a card that proves the buyer physically has it during a card-not-present sale. Requiring CVV is a basic, effective fraud check, and the code must never be stored after authorization.

CVV confirms possession of the card, not the identity of the buyer, so it complements rather than replaces other fraud tools.
