High-Risk Merchant Account

A merchant account for businesses that banks consider more likely to generate chargebacks, refunds, or regulatory scrutiny. It comes with stricter underwriting and often reserves, but it lets otherwise-hard-to-bank industries accept cards reliably.

A business is usually labeled high-risk because of its industry, its chargeback history, a high average ticket, or a subscription model — not because it is doing anything wrong. The label simply signals that a specialist underwriter, rather than an instant-approval aggregator, should review the account.

The upside of a purpose-built high-risk account is stability: instead of a sudden freeze the first time volume spikes, you get a relationship designed for your model from day one.
