Open Banking

A framework that lets a customer authorise a business to access their bank data or start a payment directly from their account, through regulated APIs rather than card rails. It powers account-to-account payments, instant balance checks and income verification.

Because the customer approves each connection in their own banking app, open banking payments carry strong authentication and settle from the account directly — so there is no card number to steal and no interchange to pay.

For high-risk merchants the appeal is that account-to-account payments sit outside the card networks entirely, which removes chargeback exposure. The trade-off is reach: adoption and regulation vary sharply by country, so it complements card acceptance rather than replacing it.
